Heavy rainfall

Synoptic situation

An area of low pressure with associated troughs and fronts was responsible for heavy rainfall over
much of the UK, especially central southern England and the north-west on 9th September 2002.

The following table consists of the data which were available from our real-time network, and shows the highest values recorded over various periods on the 9th September 2002.

There was also a report from Swanage (Dorset) of 121.4 mm in the 24-hour period ending 18:00 on the 9th, which would give a return period of around 280 years.

The St.Catherine's Point rainfall was the highest 24-hour 09 to 09 total since records began in 1982 (the previous highest was 42 mm on 2nd May 1996).

The total for Swanage (unconfirmed) is the highest in a 24-hour period (compared with 09 to 09 totals) since records began in 1961, the previous highest being 57.5 mm on 10th June 1971.

Point of Ayre's rainfall is the 3rd highest 24-hour 09 to 09 total since records began in 1962. The record is 69.8 mm which fell on 1st July 1968.

The average September 1961-1990 rainfall can be found here. The Swanage total is almost double the average monthly rainfall for September, while just over 100% of the average September rainfall fell at St.Catherine's Point in just 6 hours.
