Unseasonable rainfall may lead to flooding
Met Office forecasters are predicting a period of exceptionally heavy and prolonged rainfall later this week that will bring an increased risk of flooding to parts of the UK. Many places will see further rain, but the worst affected areas are likely to be Northern Ireland and northern parts of England, where rainfall totals over a few days may be close to the monthly average for June.
At this stage regional weather experts at the Met Office are keeping a close eye on developments. They will be working closely with Emergency Planning Units to prepare for the severe weather.
Met Office Public Weather Service Advisor for north-west England, Alan Goodman, said: "Prolonged heavy rainfall can lead to flooding and travel disruption. It is important that people keep up to date with the forecast for their area over the coming days. In addition to advising the public about severe weather, the Met Office routinely works with county Emergency Planning Units to ensure we are prepared for the possible impacts of heavy rainfall."
