News release

21 June 2007

Midsummer misery

As the unsettled weather continues, forecasters at the Met Office are predicting a drop in temperatures during the weekend and into next week, making it feel more like autumn.

Despite the high rainfall totals in many places, temperatures have been above normal so far this month. This is now set to change, bringing a cold and raw feel, especially to northern and eastern parts.

Even in the south temperatures will be below normal, with highs of 15 °C. Under the cloud and rain further north, highs could reach just 11 °C. As the wind eases during next week, some inland places could see a touch of ground frost.

Met Office forecaster, Steve Willington said: "The fall in temperature will be accompanied by more rain or showers, especially in northern and eastern parts of the UK, where a gusty northerly wind will make it feel particularly unpleasant."

The timing of the cool and unsettled weather comes at a time of year when major outdoor events are taking place. The Glastonbury festival looks like seeing a showery weekend, whilst hopes for a dry start to the tennis at Wimbledon on Monday look doubtful. Temperatures will gradually recover during the course of the week.

Flood warnings and advice on flooding in England and Wales is available from the Environment Agency, and for Scotland from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.
