Science and technology

A wide range of jobs are possible developing and delivering weather and environmental information to our customers.

  • Improving the numerical models that are the core of our forecasting products.
  • Investigating climate change and understanding atmospheric processes, the oceans and our natural environment.
  • Developing and managing our extensive range of communications, remote sensing and computing resources.

Requirements

  • First or upper second-class degree in mathematics, the physical sciences, computer science or meteorology.
  • 'A' levels in Maths and/or Physics.
  • Five GCSEs or equivalent, including English Language.
  • An interest in meteorology.

Example jobs: Forecaster, Physical scientist, Research scientists.

 

Information technology

We also have experts in a diverse range of IT-based work, such as:

  • IT support for all weather services;
  • development and support of IT Systems from desktops to supercomputers;
  • internet and intranet development;
  • software development to support for weather services to customers, research and business management.

Requirements

  • 'A' levels as a minimum, may need a degree, e.g. computer science.
  • Appropriate experience/qualifications in the relevant field.
  • Excellent skills and enthusiasm in return for extensive training.
Example jobs: IT product developer, Unix team member, GIS team member, new media designer.

 

Specialist work

The Met Office is a customer-led business and offers opportunities in a range of corporate services including:

  • Human resources;
  • Finance;
  • Property management;
  • Sales and marketing;
  • Business;
  • Communications.

Example jobs: Business accountant, Market research specialist, Editor.

 

Mobile Met. Unit (MMU) - frontline support

The MMU is a unit of Met Office forecasters who are commissioned as reserve officers in the Royal Air Force.

It provides frontline meteorological support to our armed forces, and those of other nations in joint operations, on deployment throughout the world.

Requirements

  • Minimum of two 'A' levels, or equivalent, including Maths and/or Physics at grade C or above.
  • Five GCSEs or equivalent, including Maths and English Language at grade C or above.
  • Full driving licence.
  • Able to meet specified medical and fitness standards.
  • MMU Engineers also need a degree in engineering or allied science or, in exceptional cases, an HND in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, plus several years' proven experience in a variety of engineering disciplines.

Example jobs: MMU forecaster, MMU engineer, Support staff.

 

Other areas of work

  • administrative work.

  • Posts usually require a minimum of five GCSEs or equivalent, including English Language
  • Relevant experience preferred
