Met Office training in aviation meteorology offers both pilots and those in the aviation community a comprehensive programme covering all aspects of aviation meteorology. Whether you are a beginner or simply looking to learn more, we have a course to suit your needs.

Getting to grips with the GA briefing service? For users of our online service (both free and subscription), we are considering introducing a one-day course to explain the information available on the site and how to use and interpret the products. Register and help develop the course content

 

Met. for Aviators is designed to broaden and enhance the pilot's knowledge of aviation weather, particularly in relation to low-level route planning and safety. The course is aimed at light-aircraft pilots of all levels of competency and covers topics such as basic meteorological theory and the interpretation of met. charts.

Weather Decision Making for Pilots will bring together knowledge in aviation meteorology theory and interpretation skills with Meteorological Threat and Error Management (TEM) to help you become a safe and proficient route flyer.

TEM is an overarching safety concept regarding aviation operations and human performance and is increasingly important for General Aviation. This course will focus on meteorological threats and discuss how to successfully manage them, facilitating safe and efficient flight, be it VFR or IFR, through improved 'weather decision making'.

Led by experienced pilots and leading aviation forecasters this course blends theoretical knowledge with practical exercises to give the confidence to anticipate meteorological threats which are outside the pilot's control. Case studies and exercises will take you through steps, in both planning and flight phase, to recognise and recover from these threats helping to prevent subsequent error and 'undesired aircraft states'.

Met. for Balloonists has been developed with balloon specialists Camerons and is designed to broaden and enhance the balloonist's knowledge of aviation weather, and is aimed at balloonists of all levels of competency with an interest in meteorology, or to help delegates prepare for the meteorological elements of the PPL(B), CPL(B) examinations.

Met. for Gliders is designed to broaden and enhance the glider pilot's knowledge of aviation weather, particularly in relation to low-level planning and safety. The course is aimed at glider, hang-glider and paraglider pilots of all levels of competency with an interest in meteorology, or to help delegates prepare for the meteorological elements of the BGA Bronze 'C' badge by covering the topics listed in the Met. for gliders syllabus.

Flight Planning Met. is designed to broaden and enhance the flight planner's knowledge of aviation weather in relation to flight planning and safety. The course is aimed at those involved in short- and long-haul flight planning and encompasses topics such as aviation hazards and the interpretation of significant weather charts.

These courses are run on demand at the Met Office College in Exeter or at a location to suit an individual planner's needs, and prices are on application.

Courses are centred around UK weather, with an emphasis of practical case studies. The course syllabus can be flexible to cover any additional topics of aviation meteorology that may be of interest to you.

• Learn how to make more-informed decisions regarding weather conditions, both in the pre-flight planning stage, and in the air.
  
• See how aviation forecasts are produced and the tools the forecasters use.
  
• Take the opportunity to question forecasters and trainers on any meteorological topic.

• Prices include all tuition fees, lunch, course activities and tour of the Operations Centre.
  
• Courses will run subject to at least ten aviators attending. Should there be less than ten applications, you will be offered an alternative date or have your fee refunded.
