Updated: 1546 on Tue 2 Dec 2008 UK Outlook for Sunday 7 Dec 2008 to Tuesday 16 Dec 2008:Rather changeable weather is expected to persist but with something of a north to south split across the UK as a whole. Northern areas are likely to see most of the rain and sleet with hill snow and it is likely to be windy at times as well. In between the spells of rain, brighter with showers, wintry at times. For southern areas, although some rain is expected, or perhaps wintry showers, the best of any drier weather is more likely here, although light winds could lead to fog and frost problems overnight when skies are clear. Temperatures for much of this period will vary from near normal to rather cold although it may become milder in the south towards the end of the period. Updated: 1149 on Tue 2 Dec 2008 Seasonal forecasting:Seasonal forecasting is a developing area of meteorology and, although these forecasts are not as accurate as our short-term forecasts, they do demonstrate some skill in predicting what may happen for a season (a three-month period) ahead. The forecasts provide an estimation of broad trends in temperature and rainfall and will normally be expressed in probabilistic terms, with the more likely outcome highlighted. Information contained in these forecasts can allow business to plan ahead for weather that is forecast to be different from normal.
